Photography 101 - {Killion Photography - Keller}

I got to shoot a beautiful family this week in Ft. Worth.  They were a fun family and wanted something a little different for their family pictures.  I think we succeeded!  They asked me how I got such sharp close-ups of people (dad’s pretty handy with a camera himself) so I thought I’d share a few tips with those of you just starting out.   A lot of people think that the key to getting such sharp pictures is having a good lens.  Let me give you an example that might make you think differently.  A great chef probably has really nice cookware but that’s not what makes him a great cook.  I could use his same pans and I guarantee my meal wouldn’t taste anything like his because I’ve never spent the time he has to truly understand the art of cooking.  The same is true with photography, you can still take great pictures without having the most expensive equipment.  It’s about what you know, not what you have.  Don’t get me wrong, nice equipment is always a plus and I do have very nice lenses but photography is 90% knowledge and experience and 10% equipment.  I hope inspires some of you to get out there and practice without feeling like you have to invest a ton of money to get great images.

In the mean time, here are some important things to work on:

1.  Make sure and get a good exposure.  Take a good meter reading and check your histogram for accuracy.

2.  Look at the light around you and start being aware of what light does to a face and particularly the eyes.  The more you notice light, the more you’ll start to see “good light”.  Good light can make all the difference in an image.

3.  And last, but certainly not least, choose your aperture carefully. Your aperture and distance to your subject determines your depth of field.  You have to make sure that what you want in focus will be within that focused plane.  Getting super sharp pictures comes from a dead-on focus and having a steady hand.  Shooting wide open also allows you to blur the background (we call this bokeh) which draws focus in on your subject only.

I realize this is like the mini version of photography cliff notes, but hopefully it will get you thinking. Photography is so much fun and the more you practice, the better you’ll get.  I hope these tips help some of you!

Now on to some images of this fun family….

Love this image….so different than your normal family portrait

What a heartbreaker….

The twins are gorgeous and this is also a good example of how the perfect light can really make the eyes sparkle.  I had them in the shade but turned them to the light so the light was diffused but still able to have an impact.

Love this moment between mom and dad. I need someone to get pictures of me and Jay like this~

Don’t wake me in the morning… {Killion Photography - Senior Pictures, Keller}

Staying up late is so deceiving.  It’s so fun while you’re doing it.  The house is all quiet and you can do whatever you want.  But then morning comes and you wake-up with an “I stayed up way too late hang-over”.  You know, you’re eyes are all heavy and black and you’re head feels like it’s going to explode any minute.  And the worst part is that you didn’t even do anything to deserve it! It’s not like I’m out partying at the dance club or having way too much wine while I edit pictures or dance around the house naked (I’m kidding…or am I?).  Anyways, it’s 2 in the am right now and I have GOT to go to bed!  Did you know that lack of sleep ages you faster?  Ughhh…I can feel the wrinkles gathering as I write!

As I age, I’ll leave you with a quick sneak peek for one of my seniors. She is my new hero as while we were shooting she spotted this amazing old vintage firetruck all hidden away. And to top it off, it was parked in good light with awesome greenery for bokeh (the blury background) in the background.  My heart just skipped a beat even thinking about it!

Super Model Senior! {Killion Photography - Senior Pictures, Euless}

I know I’ve been neglecting my blog lately.  I actually have tons of stuff I always have good intentions of blogging but somehow those good intentions get re-placed with editing sessions, or playing chase with Holden (which is hours of endless fun to him).  BUT…I am just fiinishing up this senior shoot of a girl I did a couple of weeks ago and couldn’t help but want to share her with you again.  We didn’t get much time during the first round so we scheduled another mini-session last week so we could finish.  She’s so gorgeous and we got some more fun ones I wanted to share with everyone!  And I promise I’ll be blogging more often this week! I have lots of cute sessions for you to check out!

Haha…I have to confess here!  We were in some funky light and I was taking a meter reading off of her cheek!  I loved the angle so much (and she has such a pretty face) that I had to get the shot! Have you ever seen more perfect eye make-up?!?!

{The Bug Catcher Part Deux} - {Killion Photography - Senior Pictures, Euless}

Okay, it’s late and I’ve been sitting here playing around in photoshop WAY too long!  I was having a lot of fun with processing tonight.  I got to do this Senior this weekend and had a blast!  She has the most beautiful face so I couldn’t resist doing some fun stuff with processing.  The perfect complexion, bright, blue eyes, and red lips.  So classically beautiful.  Her best friend (the senior post right before this) came along to help out.  If you remember her wild addiction to bugs before….well, it got even worse!  She brought a bug net and was leaping (literally) through the air, trying to catch bugs the whole time we shot.  She kept us cracking-up!

Biology Beauty - {Killion Photography - Senior Pictures, Euless}

This was the craziest senior shoot I’ve had yet!  I can’t believe we got so many cute pictures with all the obstacles she had to overcome.  But we took advantage of the little time (and one outfit) we had in Fort Worth and still got some great pictures.  And I have to say that some of these are my favorite pics yet!  My favorite part of the shoot was right in the middle of the first shot below when she suddenly stopped and crouched down on the ground saying “Oh my gosh, oh my gosh!” I was like, what the hec?!! And then I was rolling on the ground laughing when she replied with “Oh, I’ve been looking for one of these (it was a bug) for biology!!! So we had to pour out the cherry soda and capture it!  So cute!

Anyways, here are a few from the mini-shoot we got to do.  We’re going to finish it up next week since we didn’t get much time that night.  I’ll be sure and post some of those too!
